Overview

Des Moines is home of the 836 slip Des Moines Marina with a 670 foot public fishing pier. It is the only marina between Seattle and Tacoma along the eastern shore of Puget Sound. Downtown Des Moines retains a small town friendliness, with numerous restaurants offering a wide variety of excellent foods.

Originally founded in the late 1800s, Des Moines incorporated in 1959 and currently has a population of over 29,000 people. Stretching along the shoreline from Normandy Park to Federal Way, it is less than a 25 minute drive on I-5 north to Seattle, and even closer to Tacoma. Sea-Tac airport is a quick 10 minutes north.

Neighborhoods

Unique to Des Moines are a number of large retirement homes. The Masonic Retirement Center in Zenith was dedicated in 1927 and is a prominent historic landmark. The shoreline along the marina is lined with fine condominiums and many apartments (providing security without yard work), many splendid active views, and an easy walk to shops and restaurants. North Hill has views of the city, water, and Mt. Rainier. Zenith is eclectic, with quaint cottages and grand old homes. Woodmont and Redondo continue south along the shoreline. Homes run from very affordable to high value waterfront and view estates.

Many homes and schools that are located within the north/south landing pattern of Sea-Tac Airport have been the recipients of noise attenuation insulation programs offered and paid through the airport.

Schools

Highline Public Schools serve northern Des Moines, and Federal Way Public Schools serve the Woodmont and Redondo neighborhoods. Parochial schools are also nearby. Mt. Rainier High School is also in eastern Des Moines, and it is one of the few high schools that offer an International Baccalaureate Program.

Eastern Des Moines is the home of Highline Community College, situated on an 80 acre campus with 30 buildings. The school annually serves about 10,000 students. It is one of a number of community colleges situated throughout the county. Qualified high school students from suburban districts are able to earn early credits at Highline.

Parks and Recreation

Des Moines prides itself on its long history of many fun community events. Des Moines Beach Park - a state historic site just north of the marina - is a 20 acre park with a rustic red dining hall and picnic shelter that remains from its 50+ year prior history as a Swedish church camp, as well as it's prior beginnings as the site of the late 1800s sawmills upon which Des Moines was founded. Boating is an avid year-round pastime of many Puget Sounders, with thousands of miles of protected waters stretching to Alaska, dotted with islands, quaint towns, quiet anchorages, and scenic beauty.
