Overview
Tukwila is located at the north end of the Green River Valley, where the river’s name changes to the Duwamish River as it flows northwest another 10 miles into Elliott Bay at Seattle. Tukwila has been a crossroads hub since pioneer day riverboats and Native American trails. Today it is well situated at the interchange of two major interstate freeways: I-5 and I-405. Southcenter Mall and the surrounding retail centers are the largest concentration of commerce in South King County. Incorporated in 1908, the city’s population is now over 17,000 people. Sea-Tac Airport is atop the hill to the west, Kent borders to the south, and Renton is to the east. “Thriving” describes the commercial area very well, with five major department stores and hundreds of other shops, warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing, high tech companies, a Boeing headquarters complex, the Museum of Flight, and many other amenities.

Neighborhoods
To the immediate north of Southcenter is Tukwila Hill , which provides many choices of newer condominiums on its south face. The southern view of valley, mountains and nighttime lights can be spectacular. Apartments are plentiful. To the northwest are the Allentown, Riverton and Foster areas, offering very affordable homes. On the hill to the southwest is McMicken Heights with established neighborhoods and affordable homes of many sizes and qualities. Silverview is an elegant newer neighborhood of view homes, and other new homes are continually going up in this growing, well positioned area.

Schools
The Tukwila School District includes one high school, one middle school, and three elementary schools. McMicken Heights is served by the Highline School District. Parochial and private schools are also nearby.
Parks and Recreation
Community amenities have a high priority, evidenced by the river trails, a new park at Tukwila Pond, and the Tukwila Community Center which is available for meetings and receptions and is also headquarters for city Parks and Recreation. In the midst of urban activity, it is refreshing to take the winding river road home, and pass by a llama ranch, you-pick strawberry fields, horse training facilities and pumpkin patches, slow down for a rabbit or pheasant crossing, and wave to the fishermen along the river or the bicyclists along the path.
